How Did The City Of Camarillo Come To Be?

The City of Camarillo was founded in 1875 by two brothers, Adolfo and Juan Camarillo. The two were descendants of a wealthy Spanish landowner who had been granted the property in 1795. Originally known as the Rancho Calleguas, the land that now makes up the city of Camarillo was used for cattle grazing and farming. Throughout its history, Camarillo has served many purposes including a home to Native Americans, an agricultural center for citrus fruits, vegetables and grains as well as many other crops – which is why it’s often referred to as California’s “Valley of Flowers”.

In 1941, Ventura County purchased part of the land from the Camarillo family and developed it into a military base during World War II. By the end of the war, the base had expanded to include over 6,000 acres and was home to several thousand Navy personnel. The airfield at the site eventually became known as “Camarillo Airport”, now an important hub for both commercial and private aviation in Southern California.

The City of Camarillo officially incorporated in 1964, with its boundaries expanding steadily over the years since then. Today, Camarillo is a thriving community of nearly 70,000 people with numerous businesses, recreational activities and other amenities that make it one of Ventura County’s most treasured communities. As part of its growth plan, the City is actively working to preserve its historic landmarks and open spaces, promoting sustainable development practices and investing in infrastructure. These efforts ensure that the city will remain a vibrant part of Southern California for generations to come.
